Year End Awards and Point Payouts

In past years CDCRA’s “point fund” has been whatever remained in the treasury at year’s end after purchasing trophies, championship jackets, etc. The money has been distributed to the top five or top ten drivers (depending on how much money was available), in equal amounts to the Pro and Vet classes.

Typically the CDCRA National is the main source of revenue for the club each year. Last year we decided it was in the best interest of the club to spend whatever was necessary to put on a good National, even though we knew we would probably take a loss due to the very high cost of putting on the event at Victorville—almost $13,000 for track rental alone—and the extremely high cost travel (i.e. high cost of gasoline and diesel fuel) that kept the car count down. We paid out $27,980.75, and took in $26,645.00, resulting in a net loss of $1335.75. Not bad, all things considered, but we normally make a profit.

In spite of a lean year, at our banquet in January we handed out $765 worth of trophies, $814 worth of Championship jackets, and $3100 in checks to drivers, with the Pro and Vet Champions getting $500 each.

For 2009 we have prospects of a much better year. The reason is that we have a far better deal with King’s Speedway in Hanford than we had with Victorville. (No disrespect toward Victorville Speedway in this regard; they have to make a profit, and they have to contend with the Fair Board, which limits what they are able to do.) Also, the more centralized location of Hanford should help the car count significantly.

Of course we don’t want to count our chickens before they hatch, but we do hope to make a decent profit despite the current recession. This in turn will result in more money for our drivers at the end of the year.

Under the new “PAYOUTS” heading on this website you can see that we have increased the regular payout considerably. The winner now will get $200, and from tenth position on will get $70. This is a result of our being able to make better deals with promoters because they have come to realize that we put on a really good show and don’t create problems.

We are also doing something different as regards the year end awards and points payout. This is a little complicated, for which you can blame our president, Gordon Brand—he invented this—but here goes:

In addition to our overall Championships (i.e. Pro and Vet), we are going to have separate Northern Championships and Southern Championships (much like the Bakersfield and Victorville Track Championships we’ve been doing the last few years).

The Northern Championships will be based on races at Hanford, Bakersfield, and Santa Maria. The Southern Championships will be based on races at Victorville and Perris. There will be point payouts at the end of the year down to tenth place in each division, as well as for the overall Championships. Paul Jett Racing is sponsoring championship jackets for the Southern Championships, and MacroAir Technologies is sponsoring jackets for the Northern Championships. Mike VanAcker has agreed to underwrite the minimum guaranteed dollar amounts shown on the attached spreadsheet.

As you can see in the spreadsheet, each position in each of the six Championships pays a fixed minimum amount provided the driver in each position has run all the races. If he has run fewer than all the races despite the earned result, there is a diminution of 5% per race missed for the overall championship, and a 15% diminution per race missed in the regional Championships.

If every top ten driver were to make every race, the total year-end payout would be $5000. If some drivers miss a race or two the total will be less, but that won’t diminish the potential that any given driver can earn by making all the races. Furthermore, the $5,000 is a minimum. If our National is as successful as we hope, the total “point fund” could a lot more, and each position payout will be proportionally increased.
