How They Are Awarded
There is a Pro Championship and a Vet Championship. Points are awarded separately to each class.
Points are awarded to drivers (i.e. not to cars, or owners). To be awarded points a driver must be a member in good standing of CDCRA. A driver can belong to only one class. To qualify for the Vet class he or she must be at least 45 years old.
Show-up Points
Any driver who shows up at an event and takes at least one green flag—even in hot laps—gets 20 points. (For simplicity, we add these points to the heat points on our results sheets.)
Competition Points
Points can be earned in heats, A-mains, and B-mains. The points awarded to a driver are based on his finishing position within his class, not on his overall finishing position (which might be different since the two classes normally run together). Furthermore, for the purposes of assigning points (as opposed to money or trophies) the finishing order excludes non-member drivers.
Example: Bill is a Vet. He finishes fifth overall. The 1st and 2nd place finishers are Pro CDCRA members; the 3rd place finisher is a CDCRA Vet; the 4th place finisher is a non-member Vet. Bill gets 2nd place points for the Vet class.
Heats
A heat win pays 20 points. Each succeeding position pays two points less, with no points beyond 10th.
A-Mains
An A-Main win pays 60 points. Each succeeding position pays three points less, through 10th. Each succeeding position beyond 10th pays two points less, with no points beyond 26th.
B-Mains
Whenever the total number of cars at the track exceeds the number that can be accommodated in the A-main, there will be a B-main. Drivers who transfer from the B-main to the A-main do not receive points for the B-main (because they are eligible to earn points in the A-main). Drivers who do not transfer to the A-main will receive the points they would have earned in the A-main had they been allowed to start, and had finished exactly as they started.
Example: Bob is a CDCRA member Pro. He finishes sixth in the B-main. The fifth place finisher is a VET. Four cars transfer from the B-main to complete a 20 car field for the A-main. There are 12 CDCRA member Pros in the A-main. Bob gets 27 Pro points for 13th place.
The only other source of CDCRA club points is the CDCRA National. All drivers who participate in the National—i.e. pay an entry fee—get 100 points. These points are not tied to performance; they are purely for participation.
(For the sake of clarity, purse money is paid out based on actual finishing position, regardless of class, and regardless of whether the driver is a member of CDCRA or not. If trophies are awarded, they are awarded to each class, and non-members are not excluded from the finishing order (i.e. non-members will be awarded trophies based on their finishing position within their class).
Note:
This year (2009) there will be one “throw-away” race in the overall Championship. What this means is that when each driver’s points are totaled at the end of the season, his lowest point-scoring race will be discarded. If he has missed a race, then no actual points will be subtracted; if he has made all the races, the least number of points accumulated at any one race will be subtracted. The reason for this is to insure that if a driver has to miss one race—due to sickness, family vacation, or any other reason—his chances at the championship are not destroyed.
This “throw-away race” will not apply to the regional Championships.
